Here is a transcript regarding job interviews by two professionals in their field. Peter Dallimore, General Manager of Careerzone and John Nevill, Managing Director of Numero NZ Ltd.

Peter: Hi John, thanks for taking the time out to do this discussion about the top seven mistakes candidates make. Would you like to start off with one of the first mistakes you see.

John: Sure thing, the first mistake I usually see is negativity, not just about the interview, but the interview process as well. Such issues include being late and negative about current employers and/or past employers. Some even go so far as to blame other people for situations which may sometimes be their own fault. Other mistakes include typos on their CV’s and inappropriate dress attire.

Peter: Thanks, perhaps you could expand on that last point. What sort of standard would be appropriate?

John: It depends on the job. Say, for instance, you were going for an assistant-accountant job. You would probably have a suit and tie if you are a guy. However, we are not looking specifically at office jobs, are we? You need to be dressed appropriately for the role, but generally, smart/casual or business attire would be the norm. I know that people who go for temporary jobs in the construction industry just turn up in their work boots. However that’s not really our audience. I would have said smart/casual is the starting point and most office based or corporate roles would warrant business attire.

Peter: Would it be a good idea to overdress then?

John: Yes, definitely. But it also includes bodily hygeine, especially if you’re a smoker, the smell of smoke often lingers shortly after you’ve had a smoke, so make sure you get rid of the smoky smell. And again, blaming others for this can be an issue. There are some people that just make up excuses for everything, such as how they disliked their boss or that it was everyone elses fault that the company failed. When really, people are generally quite happy just to hear good honest answers.

Peter: Yes, because sometimes there are mistakes. People leave roles because they get it wrong. That does happen, doesn’t it?

John: Yes, but you have to be careful about that. People sometimes take total accountability for all success. They say things like ‘I was working for that company and I increased sales by 300%.’ Or ‘I was working for that company and I restructured the whole engineering department.’ If you were part of the team, then say that you were part of the team. Just don’t think that the interviewer will believe all the positive hype surrounding your career if you take sole responsibility for it.

Peter: Most interviewers would understand that it was not a one-person deal.

John: Definitely, especially in a recruitment company, you hear these kinds of things all the time. A lack of research is also a common issue that people make; going into the interview knowing little or nothing about the role, the company or the people. If you are going to go for an interview, invest some time into these areas.

Whether you’re running a new business or looking to augment your current one, you’ll discover new techniques that will boost earnings, increase lead generation and extend your personal/business brand. Internet business becomes very important these days as everyone wants to be rewarded as much as possible for every minute worked. It is not related to internet business directly, however, we get really upset when there are problems with delays or when we have to wait in lines sometimes. Internet business strategy is at the core of all our work. We want to help you achieve your mission.

Any internet user notices the outstanding increase in internet business. If you still doubt you may want to surfing the web for an hour to see the tremendous influence of internet business on the today’s world. You will see many internet business products and services available on the internet. If you want to start your own internet business, you need to be aware and be prepared for the severe competition, you need to have very good understand of what internet business is in order to be successful in internet business.

The first thing you should realize about internet business that the operation of internet business is completely similar to the operation of the offline not internet business. Non internet business principles are suitable perfectly for internet business. Internet business strategies include pricing, analysis of competitions and forecasting of sales, etc.

Internet business becomes very important these days as everyone wants to be rewarded as much as possible for every minute worked. It is not related to internet business directly, however, we get really upset when there are problems with delays or when we have to wait in lines sometimes.

As for internet business, we act the same we do not want to wait to the success to come; we want the fast conversion of our internet business to the tangible amount of money on the account or in the form of cash in the pocket. Many beginners get frustrated in a month as they think that internet business means speedy and failure less money generation approach.

Internet business success depends on various factors, which should be taken into consideration and you should start with own personal thoroughness and concentration. Internet business requires concentration and consistency especially if you do not meet your expectation of the internet business.

The main obstacle that many entrepreneurs may avoid starting the internet business is the initial budget shortage. If you look at the non internet business operated offline, the vast financial investments are vital for just starting the non internet business, which stops the majority of people of going into the non internet business.

Unlike the non internet business you do not need the huge financial investments if you want to start your internet business. The best in the internet business is that you need only little money to get into internet business, thus the internet business profits are very challenging.

One of my newsletter subscribers asked me whether or not it was okay to talk about salary during the first interview with an employer. They were worried that it would give the wrong impression. How could they avoid revealing their salary expectations too soon? They were wondering how they could postpone this discussion until the right time. My golden rule is to never lie to anyone. Therefore you need some good strategies to avoid this topic until the last minute.

Many times I have faced the same scenario. When asked by the hiring managers what my expectations were or what my salary history is, I have used the following approach.

1) The approach I would take would be to ask to table the question until later in the interview or for another day. It is important to me that we have first come to a common understanding on the roles and responsibilities of the job, and also, the type of experience I bring to the job, and what I will be contributing to the new company. I would prefer to be paid in line with the current job market and within the companies standards for this role.

2) If put on the spot to respond during the interview, and they insist on knowing my previous salary, I mention the total value of what I expect for salary and all compensation. That includes cash, as well as benefits and other perks. I will mention holiday time, quality of life factors, and other things like pension and health plans. I also explain that what is most important to me is that the job offer is fair within the market rather than based on what I made in the past.

3) It is very important to be aware before interviewing for the job, what the range is for that position. It is important to determine where I believe I fit within the market percentiles for that job. Most people do not meet the top end of the salary range, and there needs to be room to grow into it. I don’t recommend asking for the highest salary in the range unless you know you are a total super star. Your super star status will be confirmed by reference checks, so be reasonable, but also, don’t undersell yourself.

4) Regardless of your past salary that you earned in that job role, you should expect to be paid fairly for the current market conditions. You should explain to the new employer that regardless of your past salary, whether it was at or below the market range, you would like to be paid at the salary level that is fair. Your reasons for having a lower than average salary in the past are not pertinent to the new job, and your life situation has changed. Therefore your goal is to have a fair salary negotiation that both sides will be pleased with.

5) If you disclose your salary history information, remember to state your case about the relevance of the information. You may give your personal reasons for accepting the lower pay, but most important is to explain you want the outcome of the salary negotiation to be one where both parties are respected, and that they feel a sense of win-win in the outcome.

Whatever you to, be completely truthful during interviews. The employer has many ways of getting information and they will find out your true salary history if they are so determined. They will also learn about your past performance, and they may even ask you to produce a pay stub to prove your past salary. Remember you’re a highly skilled worker, and you bring a lot of value to the position. You just need the skills to communicate that value clearly and effectively to the new employer.

Last year, a couple in Nassau, Bahamas found 1MaidHK.com–the internet marketing arm of World Champ International Employment Agency through the internet and placed a live-in maid job order.

The job offer was too hard for any filipina domestic helper in Hong Kong to resist. It consists of 5-day work, free food, accommodation and airticket to Bahamas and four weeks paid annual leave upon completion of 2 years contract. And the good news is that the much awaited Bahamas work permit has finally been approved.

For the live-in maid position, Lorena stands out among the 4 applicants in terms of educational attainment and working experience. She is now very excited to work in Bahamas after receiving the work permit and air ticket from her Bahamas employer. “Don’t easily give up amidst trial, grab every job opportunity for your family’s future and apply through a reliable agency - World Champ International Employment Agency”, says Lorena.

The employer filed the live-in maid application in Bahamas and part of the requirement is to show that there is no suitable Bahamian candidate for the position. They also include a newspaper advertising. It took approximately 2-3 months for the Bahamas work permit to be processed from the time the job offer was confirmed. Work permit fees range between $350 to $10,000 per year depending on the category. For the live-in maid category, $650 was paid by the employer for the work permit fee.

The Bahamas work permit is valid for one year from date of issue, measures 5 inches x 7.75 inches and is light yellow green in color. The top of the work permit read as “Permit to engage in gainful occupation”. Other information such as live-in maid’s name, employer’s name, employer’s residence address as well as the applicant’s photo can be found in the work permit.

Those who are planning to enter through USA enroute to Bahamas is required to apply for a transit visa. The procedure and requirements is actually the same as US non-immigrant visa application. Inorder to avoid the transit visa problem, some Bahamas employer has to face the fact of buying a more expensive ticket from HK via London enroute to Bahamas.

With the power of internet marketing, many life changing job opportunity awaits many Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong who are willing to face the challenges of a new culture and new environment by internet posting in one of Hong Kong’s most powerful domestic helper online platform — 1MaidHK.com !

There are many sites out there that offer you the opportunity to submit your article, but you do have to read the fine print before you sign up and give up your full time job.

Some of the publishers will actually pay you for your article submission if they like what you are submitting.

There are also some that will give you a cut for your effort of submitting the article, but they usually do not pay you upfront.

This type of site usually does not pay off well for you. You may earn very little money for all your trouble.

When you submit your article for money, be sure you know what rights you have and what rights you are giving up.

Some sites will give you a choice if you want to retain rights to your work or if you don’t mind giving up the IP rights completely for a bit more money.

Often, it might come down to how much the article means to you or if you think you want to use it again.

You can find places online that advertise that you can submit your article for consideration, but be sure it’s a reputable and proper site.

Never give anything away for free unless it is to promote another venture of yours.

What is done is done, do not keep kicking yourself. There is still time to make a decision and start a career plan. That may or may not include going to a more traditional college or university. Here are a few options you may wish to think about.

Joining The Military - This is an option that is taking up by a lot of people. This option will give you the opportunity to learn a career and possible earn money to go to college later in life.

Junior College - Getting into a junior college is usually not as difficult as some 4 year universities or colleges.

Career Schools - Many career choices do not require a four year degree. Training for these types of careers can usually be done at a career school and you may be able to begin immediately.

Apprentice Options - If you are interested in a skill labor or blue collar career there may be an opportunity to become an apprentice. You will most likely need to contact employers to find out if they offer any apprenticeships or training programs.

If you just graduated or will be graduating from high school but you missed the boat on applying to a traditional college you do still have options. Maybe a traditional college is not for you and that is OK. You still have options buy you should act quickly so as not to let another year pass.

Buying domestic helper insurance is a necessity nowadays. Domestic helper insurance caters to the needs of both maids and employers. Thus, different packages are available to suit their increasing demand for protection in case of accidents and untoward events.

Domestic helper insurance companies have different policies and ways of implementing them. Awareness of what to look for in domestic helper insurance and insurance company is very important. Careful consideration of the details of the insurance policy and insurance company is a must. Knowing the insurance company creates an atmosphere of trust and confidence.

A major criterion to consider in buying domestic helper insurance is the insurance company’s credibility. Big companies are more likely to live up to their customer’s expectations compared with newbies in the business. Check how long the insurance companies have been in the business, and how they are dealing with their clients. The length of service and the kinds of clientele are strong guarantees of a company’s credibility.

Policies are the most important thing to look for in buying domestic helper insurance. The policies contain which items are covered by the domestic helper insurance. Attractive packages that suit everyone’s needs are available. Standard domestic helper insurance covers medical and hospitalization fee. Check which domestic helper insurance plan is right for you.

A basic domestic helper insurance plan covers medical expenses and hospitalization. While others include dental insurance, full protection plan can also be an option. In case of accident, full protection plan covers everything a domestic helper needs. From medical and hospitalization to dental expenses, additional assistance like repatriation expense, service allowance, etc. are included in the full protection package.

Domestic helper insurance also protects not only the employees but also the employer. The employer can also claim insurance from loss in case of theft and fraud. And some insurance companies even offer protection from unauthorized use of International Direct Dialing system. The employer can also opt to be protected in case his domestic helper suffers from some illnesses or accidents.

Buy a domestic helper insurance which is cost efficient. The insurance should attend to the basic need of both domestic helper and employer for protection in case something happens. And the cost should also be affordable and reasonable depending on the status of the employer-domestic helper relationship. Some domestic helper work full-time while some part-time. There is always the right domestic helper insurance package for everyone.

The conditions and terms of agreement before buying domestic helper insurance should be understood. It is very important that both parties know their rightful claims in case something occurs. This is the very purpose of having domestic helper insurance.

Once you have graduated from a course or have completed the required training, you will naturally be looking for a job. At the job interview it is very important that you convey to the interviewers your usefulness to their company. This is one aspect the interviewer will be investigating during the process of the interview.

There are, however, other things that matter including your physical appearance, level of confidence and interpersonal skills and as such, while preparing for the interview you should also take in to account all these factors and prepare yourself accordingly.

If you are really wishing to ace a job interview then you should prepare yourself for it right from the beginning. Initially you should master all the technical aspects related to your chosen field. Even if you have topped the course or training or achieved above average marks, you should always try to gain some current practical knowledge related to that field as it is about these that the interviewers are most likely going to ask. For example, if your qualifications are in the computer field you should know about the recent technical developments that have occurred. You read the magazines or websites that publish such matter to gain some insight.

When you apply for the interview or the selection process you have to submit a resume to the company and this will usually contain all the related information that the company may require. During the interview, the human resources team of the company will refer to the resume.

During the interview, when you have to give answers to questions, you actually have less time to think than for the written tests. As a result, even if you have the knowledge it is important that you practice the question and answers orally as well. Use simple, clear and precise language whilst answering any questions put forward by the person conducting the interview. If your answer has to be lengthy, make sure that you present it is such a way that it is in point form.

Your level of confidence is also tested during the interview. This confidence is a result of good interpersonal skills and so it is a good idea for you to sharpen that skill. If you have any weaknesses in this area, you should practice to at least gain better skills in relating to people. Never let the interviewer perceive you are under pressure or concerned. You should always act with confidence and this will assist you in being successful in a job interview.

In order to be successful in an interview you should also consider the way you dress for the interview. Your standard of dress is a very powerful tool for creating a positive impression on the interviewer. Appropriate dress will make you appear a professional and a responsible person. This too will then increase your chances in the interview.

If you look into working from home you will find a number of different ways to earn money. Work home opportunities are available that cover a wide range of skills, whether you’re a psychic, skilled at crafts or you just want to use your clerical skills.

If you enjoy arts and crafts, why not start your own work at home opportunities by selling your homemade creations? Many people who previously crafted in their spare time have turned their hobby into a successful work at home career. For instance, if you are a skilled seamstress, you can sew doll clothing, baby blankets, or even cloth diapers. Making crafts such as designing original toys, blankets, and apparel is a wonderful way to generate income, and today it’s relatively simple to do so. Many people are able to turn a profit and sell crafts to local stores, at craft fairs, or even via the Internet, using such sites as Etsy or eBay.

There are many work at home opportunities for people who like to talk on the phone. Some of the jobs available for work at home offered by internet based companies include phone actors, customer service representatives, and sales agents. In order to work, you will need a land line phone just for this purpose and computer access, but you get the opportunity to set your own work schedule.

If you have outstanding clerical skills, there is a good chance that you can find some work at home opportunities with reputable companies. Sign up with virtual assistant firms as they are often looking for new personnel and can refer work to you.

Typing, editing, responding to emails, formatting documents and other clerical skills are in great demand. You may be able to get work at home opportunities with a local business and help them save the expense of having to hiring on-site employees by doing the work from home.

Rather than searching for work at home opportunities that suits you, you may want to consider starting a home based business of your own. Doing so offers the satisfaction of being your own boss, setting your own hours, and spending more quality time with your family.

By using your creativity and knowing where to look, you can find work at home opportunities everywhere. This is a great opportunity to use your skills while earning some extra income. Invest some time in looking into your dream job; you’ll find it was worth it.
