The constant dripping noise is driving you crazy, not to mention the sleep it is depriving you of. It’s really time to fix the faucet. Upon close inspection you discover it is not simply the washer causing the problem this time, but the whole thing needs replacing. A visit to Lowe’s or Home Depot causes total confusion as you stare opened eyed at the choice you are faced with. Help is seriously needed. How do you make the choice?

Keeping the Same Style Is Easiest

The first thing you need to do is decide if you want to replace your bathroom faucet with the exact same style as before or go for something new. Replacing your faucet with the same style is the easiest route to go. You can remove the faucet from your sink and bring it with you to your local hardware store where you can buy the matching replacement. Of course if this isn’t possible or even feasible, your chore becomes a bit more complicated. There are many different types of mounting for your faucet and you will need to be aware of what type yours is before simply going and purchasing the new fixture. This is actually the hardest step in choosing your new faucet because the one that you really liked at the store may not work with the current configuration of your sink.

Determine Your Type of Mounting

The most commonly seen mountings include widespread, where there will be individual cold and hot water knobs; center set, with a single knob for hot and cold and covering all three holes which may be present for mounting on your sink; mini-widespread, similar to widespread except for the knobs being less spaced apart; and single-hole, which is similar to center set but only filling one hole and usually wall-mounted (e.g. - most likely a bathtub faucet). Sinks with 4″ holes pre-drilled are best for center set and mini-widespread type faucets. Some of the single hole faucets may also be used on these sinks. However, if yours is one of the other types, you’re better off using a replacement faucet of the same mounting type.

It’s all down to aesthetics once you have worked out which type of mount your sink has. It is a matter of personal preference as to which finish will look the best and complement the rest of your bathroom. If your bathroom has decor of an antique flavor you may decide to go with a classical style of rounded edges and flowery embellishments. On the other hand if it is modern is design, sharper and geometric angles may be more appropriate.

Add the Finishing Touches

So you have chosen your new faucet and installation is on the horizon. But have you given any thought to the finish of your faucet? Bathroom fixtures come in all manner of finishes from shiny to dull and wrought iron to chrome. Every finish has its good and bad points. Chrome and stainless steel are probably the most common of finishes but they scratch easily and water spots and fingerprints show up all too clearly. Brass, which looks like gold and is very characteristic, rusts more easily. Brushed nickel, which does not show your fingerprints, is more costly and eventually its plating will wear away. The finish is a matter of personal choice, but knowing your options will help you to decide.

There are even choices as far as the handles are concerned with some faucets. Once again these should be matched up to the decor of the rest of your bathroom. All that is left now is to take home your new faucet and fit it. Not only will you be free of the dripping noise, you are also likely to receive many compliments on what can only be described as one of the most basic bathroom items of all time.

The most important thing to know when you are buying a knife is the power and flexibility of the blade. Before you go shopping for your next knife, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Knife Blades - What You Need to Know

Drop blade knives have a slow curvature up towards the point that gives a good amount of control, especially when you need to cut deeply. You can increase strength as you cut in the point of the blade to give you more cutting power, depending on what you are cutting. The curved point of the drop point blade is a great tool to have on hand looking for those looking for something easy and powerful.

Clip point blades have a lower point and give you even more control than drop blade knives, this extra control means you can cut deeper than with other knives. Another major draw of clip point blades is that they give you enough control to slice easily. The control and slicing ability in clip point blade knives make them another popular choice for hunters.

If you are looking for a truly powerful knife that gives you many different cutting abilities, all with a strong, smooth blade, think of a knife with a Tan to blade. These kinds of knives aren’t cheap, but they make your knife work cleaner and more efficient, and they can be used in just about any situation. Tan to blades are around the sharpest blades going, so many times people use them to make the initial incisions and again for slicing.

Another great knife for slicing is the sheepfold blade. Sheepfold blades aren’t great for deep cutting, but they are the perfect blade for slicing. In fact, they are so perfect for slicing and dicing that they are used in many kitchens. Another common use of sheepfold blades is to cut people out of their seat belts after car accidents and they are usually carried by paramedics.

With all of these different kinds of blades around, it is important that you do your homework and find just the right one for the kind of work you will be doing with your knife. However, price is just as important considerations. Good knives can be extremely expensive, however, in this case, it never pays to save money by going for the cheaper version. Cheap knives will wear out in a heartbeat while expensive knives can last you a lifetime.

Many people feel the need to have a doorbell. Maybe you use more than one entry door or maybe you just have a lot of people unexpectedly drop by. You will want to keep in mind that the doorbell can be a great way to improve your home, but also it is one of the easiest DIY projects that you could take on. You will want to keep in mind that many of the electrical projects that you will want to take on at your home will be tricky and need a professional; however, you will be able to put in a doorbell by yourself.

If you think that it?s a crazy idea that you can install a doorbell, then you have no idea about the wireless models. It is the easiest way to install a doorbell and it is also the quickest way. You will find that these models are simple foolproof. You will find that the wireless doorbell will send a signal to the receiver and it will chime. It is a little bit more technical then that, but that happens to be the simplest way to explain it.

When it comes to the advantages of having a doorbell that is wireless, you will be able to purchase more than one chime unit and then program them to the same button. You will then be able to hear the chime throughout your home. You will also find that it will be more effectively, because you will be alert even if you are upstairs.

Another great advantage is the fact that it requires nothing more than just a small battery. You don?t have to worry about plugging it in or working with electrical wires. You will need to make sure that you have a number of batteries, so that you can keep them the door bell in constant working condition. You will just need to remember to change the batteries and possibly use rechargeable so that you can cut the costs of maintenance down.

You will also find that you can use more of your time picking out the product then it takes to install. Many of the doorbells are brass or gold and it can be installed in a commercial break. You don?t have to waste any of your precious time trying to install a door bell. With in minutes you will be able to sit down and relax.

Keep in mind that installation is just as easy as replacement. You will have no trouble changing the unit at all. You will just need to use a screwdriver to take off the first unit and then use the screwdriver to replace the new unit. You will find that there are a lot of ways that you can waste your time, but putting in a wireless doorbell system is not one of them.

Lead used to be a primary material for water pipes in major U.S. cities, until the early 1900?s. It was so heavily favored because of its durability and malleability. Galvanized steel and copper eventually replaced lead, and copper pipe became the most popular material used in home water service and distribution in post 1950 construction.

Lead contamination, caused by pipe corrosion and erosion, was the major source of lead-related health problems in the years before the health hazards of ingesting lead were fully understood. Two of the most serious health problems were stillbirth and high rates of infant mortality. Part of what did and continues to makes it so serious is that, unlike many other plumbing or pipe problems, there is no way to detect it without having your water tested. On its website, the EPA offers general information about lead contamination and how to test for it.

If your water is lead contaminated, it’s most likely because of one or more of the following: lead service line pipe(s) connecting your house to the municipal water main, lead-based solder (used to join copper pipes), and brass or chrome-plated brass faucets. In 1986, Congress banned the use of lead solder containing greater than 0.2% lead, and restricted the lead content of faucets, pipes and other plumbing materials to 8.0%.? This so-called ?lead-free? brass can still legally contain up to 8% lead and plumbing systems installed prior to 1986 can contain high levels of lead from both plumbing components and lead solder.

Water lines from the city or town water main to a home or building?s water system may be a lead pipe in older structures. If you or a previous owner of the structure had your plumbing system upgraded since 1960, it?s probably composed of galvanized pipe. Galvanized pipe doesn?t need lead solder to be joined. Faucets need to be checked for brass or chrome-plating, you?re the original manufacturer, a local hardware store, or a licensed plumber should be able to tell you if yours contain either.

If your pipes are the source, epoxy lining will prevent lead leaching into your drinking water. Because the epoxy lining creates a barrier between the metal pipe and the water coming in contact with it, it stops the chemical reaction that causes corrosion. It eliminates and prevents from reoccurring, leaching of lead and other metals into the water, as well as a host of other poor water quality issues such as: discolored water (red, brown, blue or yellow), metallic taste (caused by zinc or iron leeching in galvanized pipes), and water odor or bad taste (caused by bacteria).

Epoxy lining of pipes is not a new technology, just a relatively unkown one. But it?s not unproven ?both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have tested and approved the use of epoxy pipe lining to prevent lead and other contaminants from leaching into drinking water. Links to their reports are available at http://curaflo.com/CuraFlo/ResourceCenter.

There is no need for health concerns when it comes to epoxy lining your pipes, CuraFlo?s epoxy, CuraPoxy?, is certified to meet ANSI/NSF Standard 61 - the U.S. government standard for safe potable (drinking) water. ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certification means that something is certified safe to be used in potable water pipes at temperatures up to 180? Fahrenheit or 82.2? Celsius. CuraFlo?s epoxy pipe lining process protects you from lead (and other metals) in your pipes leaching into your water by preventing these metals from leaching into your water.

Home water heating is generally a fair proportion of your monthly energy expenses. Some estimates put it at 30% of the total costs. This can really add up, especially over the colder months. This article will cover a few methods that can save you money on water heating costs.

The principal sources of energy that heat water in the home are electricity or gas. For most homes, the water tank or boiler is the center of the water heating process. It is a large cylindrical metal tank. Inside the tank is a glass bottle that has insulation around it. The bottle stores the water and the metal casing protects the bottle from any damage.

At the bottom of the glass bottle will be a gas burner or an electric element. This is how the water is heated. These devices are generally controlled by a thermostat that will switch them on when the water drops to a certain temperature.

The major disadvantage of this system, apart from that fact that it uses two sources of energy that are becoming more expensive each year, is that it must constantly heat the water.

For instance, if the water is not used, some of the heat will be lost to the environment depending on the level or quality of insulation. This means more electricity or gas is used to re-heat the water.

This is the cost of having hot water at the turn of a faucet. Many people think this cost is unnecessary and an inefficient use of energy resources.

An alternative that gets around this issue is the tankless water heater. This works as the name suggests. It is pretty much an on demand hot water system.

It does this with a device known as a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is heated by an electricity or gas heater (just like the traditional system) but it is only used when water is about to be used.

Part of the plumbing of the home is wound around the heat exchanger. As the water passes through the plumbing around the heat exchanger, the water is heated.

This type of system can reduce electricity or gas usage. However, it is generally more expensive than the other system but will last longer as it’s not used as much.

A better alternative is to install a solar hot water heater. A solar hot water system is really the same as the other system when it comes to storing the water. It merely applies to the energy source that provides the heating.

Solar hot water systems can be one of two types. The first is the passive system. This is relatively easy to install but may not fulfill all your hot water needs. It can act as a way to preheat water before it gets to the main hot water system. This can decrease the amount of work for the traditional system.

An active system uses solar panels to create electricity. This can be used to heat the water you use. An active solar power system with an efficient heating storage system can save you plenty on water heating bills.

by Bruce Contryman

Our pantry cabinet design began after my wife got fed up with trying to reach and find items in the back of our storage closet.

The closet had 5 shelves from ceiling to floor and was 23 inches deep. You could store a lot of stuff in there, but couldn’t get to it with out pulling items off of the shelves.

I researched the available solutions at the local hardware stores and was appalled at the wasted spaces they left in the pantry. So I made a pantry design for a 6 shelf Lazy Susan with corresponding back shelves that utilized all the space and wasted very little. This is a great kitchen do it yourself project.

Our pantry closet is 27″ wide at the back and 41″ wide at the front, 23″ deep, and 76 inches high. The closet is very large and can hold a lot of food items.

We determined to make a one half semi circle shelf with the pivot post at the front of the closet door. We wanted the Lazy Susan large and to pivot so that we could reach the back shelves of the pantry easily.

The trick was to find the center of pantry entrance and still clear the pantry door as the Lazy Susan swung around. Once I found this point I mounted a 5/8 inch pillow block bearing to the top inside of the pantry door to make all other measurements. I hung a plum bob from the pillow block bearing to the point I marked on the floor as the center of the pantry door.

You need to make a poster board template of the closet floor of all the measurements and drawings. Each shelf has a different size so make sure you know the largest and smallest size. You should be able to come up with one size that will work for all shelves. The shelves can then be cut to the smallest size and they should fit any location.

We reviewed the design and determined to proceed. We decided that the best color to paint the inside of the closet is a solid white color so that it would make it easier to find items on the back shelves. We decided to stain all the oak plywood panels a natural oak color.

So you have decided that your kitchen is outdated and could use an entire remodel. You may have a few thoughts about what you want but maybe you have been unable to tie it altogether, or perhaps you may be stuck and have no idea where to start, but you have definitely decided that you will no longer suffer with that antiquated kitchen for another moment. In either case there are several things that you should consider along the way that will help turning your remodel into the kitchen of your dreams.

Start With the Cabinetry

One of the best things to start with is your cabinetry. This not only is a major visual focus of your kitchen, usually, but replacing your cabinets might also take up a major part of your budget. Don’t make the mistake of doing other parts of the kitchen remodel first and end up with short funds to finish out the cabinetry.

To start, find someone who specializes in kitchen cabinetry. These people know what you’re looking for and will design your kitchen properly so that you’ll have every option available to you that you want. For example, if you want lazy Susans installed in your corner cabinets, the expert you hire will make sure you have enough space in your cabinets to accommodate them. This professional will also know if there are any inherent problems with your layout and help you change them. For example, you may need to move your plumbing to get the exact layout you want or to accommodate a new dishwasher. A professional, too, can help you revise your plans to utilize existing plumbing and still get a kitchen setup you like.

Next: the Appliances

If you’re completely redoing your kitchen, the next things you’re probably going to want to think about are the appliances. If you’re upgrading everything, good for you. Today, appliances are better designed and more energy-efficient. In general, they make life easier for you, too. In some cases, the monthly utility bill savings you enjoy will pay for the new appliances in a very short time.

Make sure that the finish you choose for your appliances is going to go well with your cabinetry. Some cabinetry will not look as well with a white appliance and you may need to consider stainless steel. It is also important to let your cabinet company know if you choose any appliance that is not considered standard size as this will change your layout. An example of this might be if you choose a Sub-zero refrigerator. They are much larger than a regular refrigerator and will need to have the correct room allowed for it.

Other Considerations

You should also incorporate your seating into your new dream kitchen layout. In many homes, the kitchen is considered the heart of the house so that you’ll want to include lots of seating. Many times, you’ll be able to do this simply by adding an island for people to gather around.

When thinking about flooring, try to choose a surface which can be cleaned easily. Many are disappointed with expensive new flooring when they discover that it is next to impossible to keep it looking clean. Do some research before committing to flooring.

When designing a kitchen for yourself, everything will work out according to plan if you follow this rule: start with the cabinetry in consultation with a professional. The pros know all about the design and layout of kitchens and can ensure that the process all works out perfectly.

Before ordering your new prefab metal airplane hanger, there are things you need to know, especially when it comes to the hanger fitting your plane properly. That is why the first thing you need to do is determine the size of your aircraft. If you do not have your plane yet and are wishing to order your metal airplane hanger first, you still need to know what the dimensions are in order to make sure the doorway is large enough for the plane to fit through. It is simply not enough that the building is big enough, because a door that is too small means you wouldn’t be able to put the plane inside in the first place.

The plane

If you don’t yet have your plane, there are five common models that individuals buy. Knowing these models can help you determine what you may possibly buy and what size hangar you need. Those models are:

- The Cessna 206 - There are several different variations of the 206. However, the 206 has six seats. The length of the wing span is 35ft. 10 in., the length is 28ft. 3in., and the height is 9ft 7in. It is good to note these measurements to ensure your hanger is going to be a good fit.

- The Cessna 182 Skylane - This is a very popular aircraft. It is also said that maintenance is not too bad. The measurement of the wing span is 36ft., the length is 25ft 2in., and the height is 9ft 2in.

- Piper Cherokee 180 - This plane is another popular model with a wing span of 30ft, a length of 23ft. 4in., and a height of 7ft. 4in. This makes this aircraft one of the smaller planes on the market.

- Beech 35 - The Beech has a wing span of 32ft. 10in., a length of 25ft. 2in., and a height of 7ft. 7in. This may vary based on the Beech 25 model you purchase, by only by about 1 foot in all dimensions.

- Piper PA-28 Cherokee Series - This series has a standard wing span of 35ft., a length of 23ft. 10in., and a height of 7ft. 4in.

These are some of the most common planes that you may find flying and you know that the owners have to park them somewhere. They had to get the measurements of their plane before they ever purchased a prefab metal airplane hanger to park it in.

Other things to think about

Also think about whether or not you’re going to need storage inside of your airplane hangar. You also need some room to move around if you plan on performing any type of maintenance activities inside of the hangar. Usually these activities are carried out when the plane is outside of the hanger, but there are times that maintenance may need to be performed inside. As far as storage room, some may prefer to store their tools and other maintenance materials inside of the hanger. If there isn’t sufficient room, then you may have to invest in some sort of storage building, which can be cost-effective in a sense. However, it may be more convenient and may possibly be cheaper if you can arrange a way to store items inside of the hanger.

Just take these things into consideration and you should be able to order the right size hanger with no problem at all. Most importantly, you’ll be able to protect your precious giant-sized investment and anything that you decide to house with it. You’ll also have that peace of mind that makes investing in a hanger totally priceless.

Timber flooring has long been a primary choice for many people. It you want to avoid carpet or include the warm look of wood in your home, it’s been the best option for a long time.

However, that has changed in recent years. Bamboo flooring is an environmentally friendly, strong, lasting alternative to using timber flooring. Here’s some information about bamboo and how it performs against floating and solid timber.

Floating timber floors are most popular because they’re inexpensive. Unlike solid timber, they’re made up of wood veneer just a few millimeters in thickness. This veneer is laminated onto less expensive wood, or onto a wood composite. Bamboo floors, on the other hand, can be made of solid bamboo. That means that they’re more durable, and may be less expensive than a solid timber floor. As a plus, bamboo is harder to damage and much stronger than most woods.

Unlike floating timber floors, bamboo is attached to the surface it sits on. This means that your bamboo floor will be a lot more stable than a floating timber floor. There’s no room for the joints between pieces to open up or move around.

Unlike many timber floors, both solid and floating, bamboo doesn’t make that hollow sound when you walk on it. Bamboo flooring is also more resistant to scratching and easier to clean than many hardwood floor types.

Since there’s little to no movement between pieces of bamboo flooring, you can easily refinish your floor. Bamboo provides a better surface than solid timber, and veneered timber can’t be resurfaced at all!

Veneered timber flooring must be replaced if it’s damaged. Bamboo, on the other hand, can last another five to ten years if you have it resurfaced. It can even be resurfaced more times than just about any other floor type.

If you’re concerned about sustainability and the environment, bamboo is the better choice. While both timber and bamboo are renewable natural resources, it takes a long time for timber to renew. Veneered timber requires less hardwood to produce, but it still uses softwoods, composite woods, and even toxic and environmentally damaging glues.

You’ll find these kinds of practices mostly in China and other countries where regulation is minimally enforced. Fortunately, it takes only a little research to tell you if you’re getting some of the large percentage of products made from sustainably produced bamboo.

You may find that bamboo looks a lot different than ordinary timber. While the appearance of this grass is appealing to many, it might not work out well if you really love the feel and look of hardwood. For many people, however, the lack of environmental damage and durability of bamboo makes the appearance change worthwhile.

Where contraction and expansion due to weather are problems, bamboo holds up well. Compared to a hardwood veneer, it can be resurfaced more often, and needs no treatments or waxing to keep looking good. However, some products do contain environmentally unfriendly glues - look for nontoxic types when you buy your flooring.

If you’ve been considering bamboo flooring, or just want to find out more, take a look online. There are lots of stores offering bamboo flooring that’ll last for years, feel a lot like hardwood, and be kind to the world around you.
