Male breast cancer is a very uncommon occurrence, and only one percent of breast cancer cases are those of male breast cancer, men should be aware of the risks to prevent such a happening.

Male breast cancer, like any other cancer, occurs when there is a growth of malignant cells in the breast. The vulnerability for developing breast cancer in males becomes greater with age, and most male breast cancer cases occur in men between 60 years to 70 years of age. Risk factors include high levels of estrogen, which come with Klinefelter’s disease (an abnormality when a man has two X chromosomes with one Y chromosome, compared to the usual one X and one Y chromosome) and cirrhosis (a liver disease), radiation exposure, heredity, obesity and high alcohol intake.

Mutation of genes is also a risk factor. Mutation in genes like BRCA1 or BRCA2 increases the chance of you developing breast cancer, and such mutations generally occur during your life and have not been passed on through heredity. Otherwise, men have a significantly higher chance of developing breast cancer due to heredity; about thirty out of hundred men do get it in this manner, compared to just 5% to 10% female breast cancer victims.

Men show similar symptoms as women when it comes to breast cancer, like a lump in the breast, the peau d’orange syndrome, where the skin of the breast appears indented, like that of an orange, fluid discharge from nipples, thickness of breasts, change in breast size and skin around the nipples, and the breast skin appearing red.

Getting regular breast examinations is as important is men as it is for females. For diagnosis, biopsy is recommended, even though mammography and ultrasounds work great because men don’t have as dense tissues as females do, which makes detection of lumps easier. If the diagnosis is positive, getting the breast tissue tested for traces of estrogen and progesterone hormones is a good idea, since these hormones are known to promote cancer growth, and can be medically exterminated.

If the diagnosed breast cancer has not spread outside the original site, that is, if it is in situ, a mastectomy gives great results. If the cancer is invasive, which means it has metastasized outside the site where the cancer started developing, doctors test it to see how much it has advanced. There are four stages, Stage I being the most curable and more reactive to treatment, and Stage IV meaning the cancer has metastasized beyond the stage where a certain cure is possible. This grading helps doctors determine what kind of treatment is needed for you.

Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy are adopted to control cancer growth in the last stage, when total cure becomes difficult. For all other stages, treating male breast cancer is hardly different from treating female breast cancer.

A healthy lifestyle throughout your life, with minimal alcohol intake increases your chances of survival ten folds. Early detection is also pivotal to high survival rates. Telling your closest friends and family members is necessary. If you try to hide your disease, even from your children, you will take undue stress up on yourself. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with adequate rest during your treatment, and it is never a shame to ask friends or family for any sort of help or support that you might need. Your cancer is curable.

The first symptom that you may have breast cancer is finding a lump in one of your breasts. Usually the lump will end up being benign which is a huge relief for that means that it is not breast cancer.

For a quicker and safer treatment with great results, diagnosis should be as early as possible. A pain in the chest does not mean you have breast cancer. These pains in the chest and breasts can be due to various reasons like nearing menstrual periods or menstruating, late effects of lifting very heavy weight or objects. Many women with lumps in their breasts have had those lumps for a lifetime, and are unaffected by them. These lumps are benign and do not instantly pass off as a sure test for the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Another helpful piece of information is that some types of cancers, like the Inflammatory breast cancer and Pagent’s disease show classic symptoms of their own type. Very red and hard breasts which keep getting sore show along with the regular breast cancer symptoms are a classic case of the Inflammatory breast cancer, whereas very itchy, red, scaly rashes, easily confused for eczema, on the breasts along with other breast cancer symptoms are Pagent’s disease. Always get the doctor to clarify your doubts.

Lumps themselves can be misleading, turning out to be harmless cysts, or bag filled with harmless fluids. These can be treated instantly and efficiently by inserting a needle in the cyst and removing the fluid. If no fluid appears, the same needle can be used to extract a small tissue from the breast for testing it for cancer. This is also called a biopsy.

Sometimes lumps in the breast can be nothing by a type of cyst, which is just a type of sac that is filled with fluid. That is simple to take care of and can be done quickly and painlessly by just inserting a needle into it and removing the fluid that is accumulating in it. If there is no fluid to be found then they can still use that needle to take a small tissue sample to be tested for cancer, which is called a biopsy.

The bottom line is, be aware of the disease and it’s symptoms, whenever you have a symptom, do not treat it lightly. Always contact your doctor at the slightest sign of a symptom. Get regular examinations, and make decisions. If you have it, the risk of your daughter having it increases. You can not ignore that. Be informed, and you will make it through.

Due to increasing awareness about breast cancer, a lot of women diagnosed with the disease in the early stages of the cancer and still alive and are doing well. The number of deaths because of breast cancer has fallen steeply, and is still going down, owing to better availability and success of treatments and therapy than a few years back.

We are living in a time of apparent breast cancer, and we should be happy for the progress that has been made against this disease that affects so many people across the world. This also means that progress must be continued to be made if we are going to want to see it stop having such a huge affect on families. This is the most common form of cancer found in women.

There has been a constant decline in the death rate for breast cancer since 1986, and it is primarily due to betterment in diagnostic techniques; there are better screening facilities and more efficient breast examinations today, which help in early diagnosis, which helps survival better. As we know early diagnosis to be a boon, we need to put in even more effort into providing better technology, and help more women fight the disease successfully.

Certain preventive measures for breast cancer should be adopted by all women. Post adulthood, every woman should get mammograms done once in three years, and the frequency should increase with age, since age makes you more prone to breast cancer. If, ever, you have any queries or doubts regarding breast cancer, the best person to inform you on it is your doctor. Remember to always go to a professional for your breast examination. Doctors will tell you when to seek medical advice with what may seem like a symptom, and when to recognize an abnormal change in your breasts. If you’re not sure of a change or sign, it is best to still tell your doctor about it.

It is always best to be well informed about the normal and aberrant conditions of your breasts. You may often suddenly find something wrong, and there may be nothing worrying about it, you should take that as a sign and make sure you eliminate the possibility of it being breast cancer. Lumps, in both women and men, are often benign and do not develop cancer cells, but knowledge is never wasted.

Research is imperative to prevent breast cancer from taking more lives. Digging deep into why so many people keep becoming vulnerable to breast cancer, how it can be fought off, how the invalids’ lives can be improved, is the only sure way to ward off breast cancer and forget it as a nightmare.

Metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of breast cancer. Even after treatment, some cancer cells may not die and continue multiplying. These cells may spread to other parts of the body through blood or lymphatic vessels and start the development of cancer in those areas. This stage of the cancer is called metastatic breast cancer.

Metastasis can occur due to three reasons. The first reason has already been stated, that is, when some cancer cells escape from treatments and make cancer recur. The second is when, during a treatment, the cancer goes on advancing, and starts developing tumors in other organs, and sometimes, when cancer is diagnosed so late due to carelessness of the patient or inefficiency of medical professionals, that it has already metastasized to other parts of the body.

Metastasis usually occurs in bones, and organs like lungs and brains. Unfortunately, breast cancer has the highest chance of metastasizing. If you have had breast cancer, and later develop another form of cancer, in all probability, it is breast cancer recurring. The fortunate side of this is that breast cancer is very much treatable. However, if you develop breast cancer again in the breast that was not diseased earlier, it might just be a new cancer.

Metastatic breast cancer develops in almost thirty out of hundred women who have had breast cancer, which makes knowledge about it so necessary. When the cancer has not metastasized to organs like the lungs and brain, or when there is a presence of estrogen and progesterone hormones in cancer tissues, the cancer is treatable. Also, if you have already not undergone many treatments for your previous cancer, and the malignant cells show some change after therapies, your treatment can be successful.

Since a total cure of metastatic disease is very difficult, the treatment involved is very long and cumbersome. A combination of Systemic therapy and regular monitoring is needed. This involves chemotherapy, hormonal treatment and radiation therapy, and for monitoring, regular mammograms, breast ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, bone scans are done. Treatment also varies with purpose, chemo and radiation therapies concentrating on the whole body cure, surgeries like lumpectomy and mastectomy on specific body parts, and oral aspirin intake along with other drugs focusing on lessening physical pain of the victim.

Metastatic breast cancer is the worst phase of your cancer, and you should know that scientists are working day and night to invent better methods for prolonging and normalizing your life. Because the prognosis is not usually determined, you have to decide when to end your treatment. Ending treating is necessary because a longer treatment comes with more and more side-effects. Consult as many people as you want, never hesitate to ask your doctor any question, any number of times, but in the end, it all comes down to you to make the decision.

Breast cancer can develop silently in your breasts while you’re doing your daily chores without a care, and not show a symptom until it has advanced to a late stage. Often, there is no pain felt by the victims, and that’s a dangerous thing because when the patient does start to notice the abnormalities, it’s already too late.

Do not sit assured that you will not develop the cancer; whatever you age of family history be. They may just increase or decrease your risk of getting it, but to be safe, get regular checkups, lest you wake up one morning to find a slightly limp breast and discover you are at an advanced stage of breast cancer.

It is very encouraging finding and talking to a person who has survived a bout of breast cancer, whether it is you or someone you know who has it, it can lend a sort of strength to get through the hard times when you didn’t think it would be possible. You will need this strength to stand up to the people who may belittle you, or try to tell you that having it is no big deal.

There are people who can not even think of handling something as gruesome as cancer, and it’s only natural. And not everyone you meet will sympathize with you, or share your grief, and if they did, only tears and mourning would prevail in the world. You will have to stand up alone, gather the courage to talk with doctors and know all there is to be known about the progress of your treatment. You have just one body, and you should do all you can to not let it go.

Breast cancer can be vanquished with sheer will, the many proud survivors will tell you. Be willing to cure it. If you feel sad, do not demean yourself. Everyone feels depressed sometime or the other and cries. It’s normal to let your emotions flow out, but accumulating grief within you will put so much more pressure on your already very sick body and will dampen all your chances to recover. Vent out your anger, outrage, frustration, whenever you feel you need to, no one would call you weak for doing so, but remember, do not lose hope.

One thing that will help to survive this is to not focus on it. Yes you have been diagnosed and that is as hard to handle as anything, but if you focus on what makes you happy and enjoying life as much as you can, you will see that you will not be consumed by your disease, and family and friends will be able to see that as well.

Inflammatory breast cancer takes lives of most of the people who develop it. It is a very “hostile” type of cancer, which thankfully, is also rare. It gets its name from the inflammation the breasts of the victim develop. Contrary to other forms of cancer, inflammatory breast cancer can develop in relatively younger females, too. Rarely do men develop IBC.

In Inflammatory breast cancer, the cancer cells block lymph vessels of the breast. This gives rise to the apparent inflammation and redness of the breast of a person diagnosed with IBC. Other forms of cancer usually develop in women as they age, but that is not the case with IBC. It can occur in young women, too. It is also said that African American women are more prone to developing IBC, and at a younger age too, compared to White women.

The progression of IBC is its most alarming feature. The time lapse between the first symptom appearing and the cancer reaching a very advanced stage may be leek than two weeks. This however, may be one of the reasons for early diagnosis of IBC, since the symptoms are very apparent early on due to the cancer’s fast advancement.

The unique characteristic of Inflammatory breast cancer is that no lump formation is associated with it. This characteristic makes it all the more dangerous, because mammography and ultrasound can not detect it, and it often goes undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed. Biopsy is the best method for diagnosing IBC.

If you have developed IBC, your breast will appear extremely red or purple, often bruised and tender. The breast also gets enormously swelled, giving rise to its inflamed look. The breast size will increase rapidly, and there might be perpetual itching, too. You might get inverted nipples, a heavy aching and burning feel around the breast. The skin around the breast may also appear bumpy, like the skin of an orange, which gives name to the condition’s medical term, peau d’orange. This condition occurs due to fluid accumulation. Other symptoms are changes of color or texture in the skin around the nipple (areola), swelling of the nipple, swelling under the arm and on top and below the collarbone.

The most common misdiagnosis of Inflammatory breast cancer is mastitis. Mastitis is just a breast infection that shows the same symptoms like redness and swelling, as IBC. After a week or two of treatment for mastitis, your symptoms should start disappearing; otherwise, it’s not mastitis. Lymph vessels can get blocked because of other reasons than cancer, too, such as operations on the chest. This is not any type of cancer. The best way of making sure is getting a biopsy done.

The treatment for Inflammatory breast cancer has greatly improved over the last few years. When the mortality rate used to be 100% few years back, today, around 60% women diagnosed with IBC live through their natural life-span. For treating IBC, a combination of therapies is required. Doctors usually start with chemotherapy and hormonal treatment, and follow it up with neoadjuvant therapy and mastectomy, after which, radiation therapy is highly recommended to prevent a recurrence of cancer.

Through all the misery of Inflammatory breast cancer, you should remember the figures of mortality rate decreasing immensely. These indicate that you have a great chance of fighting if off and being happy like all other people that you know.

No one really knows what causes breast cancer but it is certain that there are definitely things that are linked to the disease. While having some of these things which are usually known as risks, can increase ones chanced of getting breast cancer, it can also mean that even if you have some or all of these, that you might not necessarily get it. It is not a sure fire way of determining if you will ever get breast cancer, and should not be the only thing used in determining it. It is the same way for people who get into car accidents; there are just too many different factors that play a part so it is very difficult to pinpoint it, if one can do that at all.

One thing is true and that is the risk for getting breast cancer goes up as you get older. That is something that just cannot be taken out of the equation. It is also said that one has a greater chance of developing it if someone in the family has also been diagnosed which makes one think that genetics may play factor on whether or not you may get it. Race does not really make that much of a difference, but it also depends on who you talk to. Many researchers have said that women who don’t have kids until a later age may have a higher chance, but then that is part of the age factor. Men do get breast cancer as well, but their numbers are not nearly as high as the number of women who get diagnosed.

A hot research topic is trying to determine whether contraceptive and preventive birth control measures increase the risk factor for breast cancer. This topic has been a favorite debating topic among researchers, but nothing can be said about it until more conclusive researches are done.

Using alcohol is linked but then alcohol can play a big part in furthering the development of any type of cancer. One way to combat this is bring down the amount of drinks you have each day, or if you have a higher chance sometimes cutting alcohol out entirely can help.

Weight problems and obesity deteriorate heath, giving rise to various health problems, one of which is an increased risk of developing malignant breast tissues. Fighting this is easy; you just need to exercise a lot more and better, enhancing your general health and keeping breast cancer away. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Like it’s said, the causes for getting breast cancer can be many and varied, and it’s not possible to understand the key factor that leads to it. However, there is a lot of research going on in this field, and someday, the key might be discovered. With that, we can prevent many women from getting ailed, diagnose lots of others early and save them from the misery of living through the disease, and cure so many others who could have just lost hope.

For proper treatment, it is necessary to know the type of breast cancer you have developed. Causes, symptoms and treatment vary for different types of breast cancers, just as treatment may vary depending on the stage of your cancer.

Breast cancer can either spread to other parts of the body than its original site, or remain confined there. Depending on this, there are two major types of breast cancer. In situ or non-invasive breast cancer is when the cancer does not spread out. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ is the most common In Situ breast cancer. The milk ducts of the breast start developing cancer cells that do not metastasize or spread out, and this type of cancer is called Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. Mastectomy largely cures DCIS, and sometimes is all the treatment that is needed.

Metastasis occurs when the cancer cells do not remain in the site where they initially develop, but spread to other parts of the body and start malignant cell formation there. When this happens, the cancer is called Invasive breast cancer. The two commonest types of invasive breast cancer are Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.

Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, or IDC, originates in the breast ducts, breaking through the duct lining, spreads to the breast tissue and can metastasize further from there. IDC is the most common form of breast cancer, accounting for almost 70 to 80 out of every hundred cancer cases. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma starts developing in the lobules of the breast that produce milk, and then comes out of there and spreads to other parts. Instead of a lump formation, there is thickening of the breast, usually, when a person develops Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.

All forms of breast cancer do not originate in ducts or lobes. Breast tissues, fibrous connective tissues, blood vessels and lymph vessels can also be the originating site for breast cancer. It is also possible that the cancer does not start in the breast, but spreads to the breast from cancer cells of another cancer. However uncommon these types are, it’s always good to be informed. Inflammatory breast cancer, Paget’s disease of the breast, metaplastic breast cancer, angiosarcoma, osteosarcoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma are some uncommon types of breast cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is very aggressive, and can originate and start developing cancer cells so rapidly, that within a week, the cancer becomes very advanced and dangerous. This is the reason it is important to know everything about these rare types; you just do not know for sure if they can attack you.

Doctors usually grade invasive breast cancers. They compare the affected breast tissue with a normal tissue, and grade depending on how much the affected tissue resembles a normal one. This process makes it easier to decide the course and procedures for treatment. Grades start from I to III, Grade I implying the cancer is not very advanced, and Grade III suggesting that the breast tissue has lost its normal functioning ability and that the cancer has progressed highly.

You should be well-informed about everything related to these cancers, that you know when a symptom suggests you might have breast cancer, when to seek medical advice, that the progress of your treatment is good or not, and all the measures necessary to ensure you stay healthy and get cured.

Breast cancer can be very terrifying, especially if your cancer has advanced. It is inevitable to feel lonely, even when you have the support of your family and friends. You will feel they do not understand your fears, and, in such times, interacting with other breast cancer patients and survivors can go a long way in alleviating your fears and misery.

There are, for such terrible times, support groups which have been started by women who know exactly how you feel and know just want you need. These groups not only let you interact with breast cancer victims and survivors from across the world, but also give you priceless information on your cancer and treatment, because they combine experience with research.

Susan G. Komen’s cms.komen.org, besides providing you all the information on breast cancer that you may need, has internal research projects to help you cure better and faster. Being the largest group of breast cancer survivors, you will never feel left out in the presence of these women. Also are groups, like bcsupport.org and y-me.org, which have chat rooms where breast cancer survivors and activists can meet up and interact with each other, receive news on latest developments in the field, and suggest better treatment methods as well as inform you on the prevalent technology and breast cancer know-how.

Two breast cancer victims started breastcancersupport.org in 1988, realizing the lack of importance the society attached to breast cancer and its victims’ needs. Another group, y-me.org, has the sole objective of not letting you feel you are alone. Do you now realize how many people, who will not treat you as aliens, want to help you?

These organizations will not give you a magical power to fight breast cancer. They just let you know that you are not the only one going through these miseries, and that, in no manner, do you have to be the only one to face them. They stand by you, cheer you up, and see you through it through the sheer power of understanding. You, too, will find yourself developing affection for them, and might even want to volunteer to help other scared women, just by being friends with them. This will give you a mental strength for surviving your treatment, more than you can now imagine.

Support groups are not limited to providing you emotional support; in case of financial needs, many people will volunteer donations for your treatment, just as you might, some day when you are cured, for another woman. There is no reason why you should stay lonely and fight this when you have so many people who willingly want to stand by you.
