If Oprah Winfrey has her way Universalism will dominate religious discourse. By advent of her extreme popularity and influence now even in the political arena, Christians may be shamed into accepting her worldview or at least to be silent about their own. She called Barack Obama “The One” and helped propel him to the White House.
Barack and Michelle Obama have been friends with Oprah for a long time. They agree with her philosophy of many paths to God. The Obama’s say they are followers of Christ. Their former pastor and also Oprah’s pastor for awhile was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Rev. Wright taught them the Biblically errant concept of black liberation theology. Rev. Wright also taught that Jesus is NOT the only way of salvation, that that hell doesn’t exist, and that practicing homosexuals will still go to heaven. Oprah is no longer attending Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church, but she is now promulgating New Age philosophies using her magazine, radio, and television as a platform.
Once of Oprah’s sources of truth is A Course in Miracles. It purports that sin is fictitious. This concept makes room for behaving however one sees fit. This is relativism of a moral nature. What you call sin may not be sin to me. Therefore, a woman’s right to choose is more powerful than the baby’s right to live in her womb.
The Bible is clear concerning the issues of the life of the unborn child, Homosexual acts, and living together before marriage. Passages relating to these important Christian values are not based on “obscure” scriptures as Barack Obama has mentioned in his book, The Audacity of Hope. Yet, the philosophy of Oprah and Obama is permeating our culture with a vengeance. Traditional Christianity is viewed by these pundits as old fashion, out dated, and ignorant. Christians are being led astray and coerced into silence or compliance by the mere fact of a media or political person’s powerful communication abilities.
In my new book, The Oprahfication of Our Culture, I call this acquiescence cultural Christianity. The time has come for followers of Christ to avoid accommodation by being “uncultured” Christians. Believers must refuse to draw back into our storm shelters and complain. Be vocally confident about your morals and values! Take a stand and no matter what happens, keep standing! Don’t be browbeaten into reticence.
Are we still a center/right country or are we progressing more toward the fanatical left in philosophy? Three states, California, Arizona and Florida, just attested conservative values by passing constitutional amendments maintaining traditional marriage as being between a man and a woman, a real setback to the homosexual program. Yet, lawsuits have been sponsored in California to try and annul the will of the people. Is a preacher open game for litigation by instigators who provoke him to quote the Bible from his podium, because their analysis of scripture is that of “hate speech?” Does the Bible contravene certain suppositional civil rights? Do those civil rights abolish the freedom of speech and of religion we have rejoiced in for over two hundred years in our distinguished country? Is America sliding down a slippery slope?
It seems that the prophet Isaiah perceived this period in our history when he said, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20 The Amplified Bible
Things seem to be flipped on their heels. Christian believers are portrayed as hate mongering bigots for simply opposing “politically correct” views of the cultural elites in New York, Washington and Hollywood. In spite of these very outspoken, well funded, radical, left leaning voices, Christians are instructed to be watchmen on the wall and sound the alarm (Mark 13:35-37). The Word of God is not hate speech. It is the standard of righteousness in an increasingly dark world. Don’t be silent. Watch, pray and say. Speak up for truth.
